Welcome to the first blog post on Caleb Ruins' website! I’m thrilled to share with you the journey of reimagining classic literature through the vibrant and dynamic world of comic book-style illustrations.
Why Public Domain Classics?
When I began my work as an illustrator and storyteller, I wanted to breathe new life into timeless stories that have shaped literature. Public domain classics like The Mucker, Frankenstein, and The Trial are not just tales of adventure, horror, or drama—they are universal stories that resonate even today. By illustrating these works, I’m not only preserving their legacy but also making them accessible to a modern audience in a bold, visual way.
From Page to Panel: The Creative Process
Every book starts with an idea: how can I capture the essence of a story that has been told for over a century? I read each work carefully, immersing myself in the characters, the setting, and the themes. It’s essential for me to respect the original work while adding my unique artistic touch.
The process often begins with key moments from the book. Whether it’s Billy Byrne standing tall in The Mucker, Mary Shelley’s Creature coming to life in Frankenstein, or the eerie courtroom of The Trial, I select scenes that convey the story’s core emotions and themes.
Challenges and Rewards
Reimagining these iconic tales comes with its own set of challenges. I’m tasked with finding a balance between staying true to the original vision of the author and adding a fresh perspective that resonates with modern readers. However, the reward is seeing these stories come alive in a whole new format. Readers who may have found these works daunting in text form can now experience them through detailed, engaging illustrations.
Why Comic Book Style?
Comic books are a form of visual storytelling that allows for a deep connection between the reader and the narrative. By turning these classics into comic book-style editions, I’m able to amplify the emotional intensity and action that these stories inherently carry. The action-packed scenes, the dramatic lighting, and the vivid color schemes add layers to the narrative, making it not just a reading experience but a visual one.
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning! As I continue illustrating these public domain masterpieces, I’ll be expanding the collection with new stories and more illustrations from literary classics like The Divine Comedy, Lord of the World, and The Poison Belt. You can follow the journey on this blog where I’ll share insights into the creative process, sneak peeks at upcoming projects, and behind-the-scenes looks at how these illustrations come to life.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure of bringing the world’s greatest stories to life. I’m excited to share more with you in the future.
